Consumer Price Index: New basket weights, 2022 update

June 15, 2022, 8:39 a.m. (EDT)

Updated basket weights for the goods and services in the Consumer Price Index (CPI), representing consumer spending patterns in 2021, are now available. The 2021 basket will combine expenditure data from the Household Final Consumption ExpendituresSurvey of Household Spending and alternative data sources to account for shifts in spending due to the COVID-19 pandemic and recovery.

The updated weights will be incorporated into the May 2022 CPI, which will be released on June 22, 2022. They will replace the previous weights, which were based on 2020 purchasing patterns.

The weight reference period for the new basket is 2021. The index base period for the all-items CPI remains 2002=100.
