Radishes are among the first vegetables to be planted and harvested during Canada’s short growing season, generally taking only one month to grow from seed to harvest.
During the 2021 Census of Agriculture, 1,425 farms reported growing radishes, with most located in Ontario (439 farms), Quebec (409) and British Columbia (320). Farmers reported growing radishes in every province, and even in Yukon (4 farms). Canada’s cooler spring temperatures are ideal for growing radishes, as they don’t like too much heat.
In 2024, Canadian farmers harvested 993 hectares of radishes, up 1.7% from one year earlier but 9.3% less than the record high harvested in 2020.
Farmers sold 15 312 tonnes of radishes in 2024, up 7.9% from one year earlier but 6.5% less than the record high sold in 2017. Nevertheless, marketable production of radishes in 2024 was over double that of 2002.
The farm gate value of radishes rose 12.5% year over year to a record high $25.3 million in 2024, with just over two-thirds (68.4%) of the sales coming from Quebec farms.
