Canadian investors continue to rely on US securities during trade tensions

As the trade uncertainty intensified in early 2025, Canadian investors added $61.0 billion in US securities during the first half of 2025. In July and August 2025, Canadian investors continued to increase their exposure to US portfolio assets. The article "International transactions in securities during recent Canada-U.S. trade developments" examines, among other aspects, how the net acquisitions of foreign securities by Canadian investors have evolved as trade tensions between Canada and the United States escalated in 2025.

Manufacturing sector drives September's growth

Real gross domestic product (GDP) rose 0.2% in September, up for the second time in three months, more than offsetting August's decline. The manufacturing sector led the overall growth with a 1.6% expansion in September, as durable-goods and non-durable-goods manufacturing industries grew. The goods-producing industries drove the real GDP increase for the second time in three months.

Financial industries report gains in operating profit in the third quarter

Canadian corporations reported an operating profit of $200.0 billion in the third quarter of 2025, up $7.4 billion (+3.8%) from the previous quarter. This growth was driven by the financial industries, which outperformed the non-financial industries. Compared with the same quarter one year earlier, Canadian corporations' operating profit increased by $9.7 billion (+5.1%).

Over two-fifths of children and youth were able to consult a primary health care provider the same or next day

Nearly 9 in 10 (89%) children and youth living in the provinces had a primary health care provider in 2024. Among children and youth who had consulted a primary health care provider when they were sick or concerned about their health, 42% were able to consult a primary health care provider the same day they requested or else the next day. In addition, 40% of children and youth were able to consult a provider within two days to less than two weeks, and 18% waited two weeks or more for the consultation.

Canadian general government spending in 2024 remains above COVID-19 pandemic high

Spending by the consolidated Canadian general government (CGG)—that is, all levels of government including the federal, provincial, territorial, local and other government entities combined—reached a new high in 2024. On a nominal basis, spending, excluding consumption of fixed capital and acquisition of non-financial assets, totalled $1,137.1 billion in 2024, an increase of 3.1%, or $34.7 billion, from 2023. Social protection (24.9% of total spending) remained the highest spending category by function for the CGG, followed closely by health (23.7% of total spending). Combined, nearly half (48.6%) of all spending in 2024, by all levels of government, was committed to social protection and health.

More than half of police-reported cybercrimes are related to fraud or extortion

The Canadian Internet Use Survey found that over two-thirds (70%) of Canadians experienced a cyber security incident in 2022, up from 2020 (58%) and 2018 (52%). Fraud (46,301 incidents) was by far the most reported cyber-related violation in 2024, accounting for almost half of all cybercrime incidents. Combined with identity theft (957 incidents), identity fraud (4,283) and extortion (6,042), fraud-related violations accounted for 62% of cybercrimes.
