Many of Canada’s most popular baby names in 2024 also ranked among the most popular in six other countries around the world, as far afield as across the pond and down under.

We’ve compared our most popular baby names data against those of six countries: the United States, Scotland, Norway, France, New Zealand and Australia.

A flood of Noahs

There were Noahs, Noahs everywhere among the top ten 10 boy names of the seven countries studied in 2024, placing first among boy names in Canada, New Zealand and Scotland, second in the United States, third in Australia and fifth in France.

Although the name Noah means rest or repose, chances are there was little of either for the busy parent or parents of the 2,115 baby boys named Noah in Canada in 2024.

Olivia and Oliver blossomed

The names Olivia and Oliver mean olive tree and suggest fruitfulness. Both names were fruitful indeed in 2024.

Olivia was the most popular girl name in Canada, the United States and Scotland in 2024, while it ranked second in Australia and third in Norway.

Oliver was the most popular boy name in Australia, second in New Zealand, third in the United States and Norway, sixth in Canada and eighth in Scotland.

In Canada, baby Olivias (1,639) outnumbered baby Olivers (1,244) in 2024.

Leo’s roar

In Canada, 1,410 Leos joined the pride of lions in 2024.

Emma has universal appeal

Emma means whole or universal. Emma was the second most popular girl name in the United States and Norway in 2024, and it ranked third in Canada and fifth in France.

Emma was the sole name to place among the top 10 for girls in both Canada and France in 2024.

Canada welcomed 1,358 Emmas into the world in 2024.

Chloe, distinctly Canadian

The name Chloe means blossom or young green shoot. In 2024, Chloe was Canada’s eighth most popular name for girls, down from third in 2010 and 2014.

The name Chloe did not crack the top 10 in the other six countries studied, suggesting Chloes may have trouble finding their name on novelty key chains or licence plates in foreign lands.

In 2024, 868 newborns were named Chloe in Canada.
