You might say the Consumer Price Index is part of the furniture here at Statistics Canada—we’ve been tracking prices for over a century.
That includes not only prices for furniture, but also everything else you need to outfit your home, such as textiles, appliances, cookware, and tools.
It’s worth noting that prices for most of these items were largely unchanged in 2025 (on an annual average basis) compared with 2024, after some significant increases not too long ago when the COVID-19 pandemic upset supply chains and drove up prices.
Furniture, window coverings, bedroom
Prices for upholstered furniture (-0.9%) decreased slightly in 2025, while wooden furniture (+2.6%) and other furniture (such as mattresses) (+1.6%) increased moderately, following steady annual declines after the sharp increases observed in 2022.
Prices for window coverings (-1.6%) and bedding and other household textiles (-1.9%) were also slightly cheaper in 2025, after four straight years of increases for both categories.
Appliances, cookware, tools
Appliances are often the most expensive items to buy or replace in a household, so any decrease in prices provides potential cost savings.
Prices for cooking appliances (+0.2%), other household appliances such as toasters and kettles (+0.4%), and refrigerators and freezers (+0.1%) were largely unchanged in 2025 and increased slightly for laundry and dishwashing appliances (+1.6%).
Non-electric kitchen utensils, tableware and cookware (-2.3%) were slightly cheaper in 2025, and largely unchanged for tools and other household equipment (+0.3%).
Retail sales up in 2025
The latest retail data suggest that consumers continued a steady pace of home-outfitting in 2025. In the first three quarters, retail sales for indoor home furniture, home furnishings, housewares, home appliances, and hardware and tools all increased compared with the same period of 2024.
Retail commodity sales data for the fourth quarter of 2025 will be released on April 9, 2026.
