Farm product prices, March 2022

Prices received by farmers in March for grains, oilseeds, and specialty crops, cattle, hogs, poultry, eggs, and dairy products are now available at the provincial level.

In March 2022, canola prices continued their upward trend in all Western provinces due to tight supplies and strong world oilseed crush. This was their sixth consecutive month-over-month price increase. Compared with March 2021, canola prices posted at least 22.0% growth among all production provinces. Soybean prices also rose across production provinces, up by at least 9.9% from March 2021, partially as a result of robust demand for vegetable oils.

Wheat excluding durum prices also posted monthly increases all across Canada in March 2022, ranging from 1.1% in Prince Edward Island to 16.8% in Ontario. Tightening supplies, and a good quality crop in addition to the uncertainty of world supply caused by a geopolitical conflict contributed to the price increase.
