Aircraft take-offs and landings at the 93 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations decreased 3.1% in December 2010 from December 2009. These airports reported 346,380 movements in December compared with 357,642 movements in December 2009. Toronto/Lester B Pearson International, Ontario (34,305 movements) followed by Vancouver International, British Columbia (23,191 movements) were the most active sites in December 2010. Year-over-year increases were reported by 49 airports.

There were 263,789 itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) reported in December 2010. This represents a 3.6% decrease (-9,800 movements) compared with the same month a year earlier. The year-over-year variations ranged from an increase of 1,809 movements (+5.6%) at Toronto/Lester B Pearson International, Ontario to a decline of 2,010 movements (-47.9%) at London, Ontario. Year-over-year increases in the number of itinerant aircraft movements were reported by 42 airports in December 2010.

In December 2010, there were 82,591 local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) recorded. This represents a decrease of 1.7% (-1,462 movements) compared with the previous year. Calgary/Springbank, Alberta recorded the largest gain, increasing by 1,501 local movements (+36.2%).

Itinerant movements: domestic, transborder and international

There were 212,974 domestic itinerant movements reported in December 2010, down 5.3% (-11,976 movements) from December 2009. Vancouver International, British Columbia (17,024) followed by Calgary International, Alberta (14,748) reported the greatest number of domestic itinerant movements.

Sixty-six airports reported 39,600 transborder itinerant movements (between Canada and the United States) in December 2010, up 4.6% (+1,726 movements) from the previous year. Toronto/Lester B Pearson International, Ontario (14,924) reported the greatest number of transborder itinerant movements. This represents 37.7% of the total transborder itinerant movements.

In December 2010, thirty-four airports reported 11,215 other international itinerant movements, up 4.2% (+450 movements) from the previous year. Toronto/Lester B Pearson International, Ontario (5,013) recorded the greatest number of other international itinerant movements. This represents 44.7% of the total other international itinerant movements reported.
