For the fifth year in a row, the number of aircraft take-offs and landings at Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations decreased slightly compared to the previous year. These 93 airports reported 5.5 million movements in 2013, down 1.8% (-101,350 movements) compared to 2012. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario (433,610 movements) followed by Vancouver International, British Columbia (301,725 movements) continued to be the most active sites in 2013.

There were 4.0 million itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) reported in 2013. This represents a decrease of 1.7% (-66,891 movements) compared with 2012. The year-over-year variations ranged from an increase of 14,778 movements (+10.7%) at Edmonton International, Alberta to a decline of 14,326 movements (-28.7%) at Edmonton City Centre, Alberta. The growth in movements at Edmonton International Airport can be partially explained by the migration of aircraft from Edmonton City Centre Airport which closed on November 30th, 2013. Year-over-year decreases in the number of itinerant aircraft movements were reported by 58 airports.

In 2013, there were 1.5 million local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) recorded. This represents a decrease of 2.3% (-34,459 movements) compared with 2012, and the sixth consecutive annual decline. Montréal/St-Hubert, Québec (91,063 movements) followed by Boundary Bay, British Columbia (84,120 movements) reported the largest number of local movements in 2013.

Itinerant movements: domestic, transborder and international

There were 3.3 million domestic itinerant movements reported at 93 Canadian airports in 2013, a decrease of 1.8% (-60,489 movements) from 2012. Vancouver International, British Columbia (226,572 movements) followed by Calgary International, Alberta (193,740 movements) and Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario (184,831 movements) reported the greatest number of domestic itinerant movements.

Ninety-three airports reported 505,175 transborder itinerant movements (between Canada and the United States) in 2013, down 1.4% (-6,988 movements) from the previous year. Year-over-year decreases were reported by 57 airports. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario reported 185,271 movements. This represents 36.7% of the total transborder itinerant movements.

In 2013, seventy-nine airports reported 137,021 other international itinerant movements, up 0.4% (+586 movements) from 2012. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario (62,422 movements) followed by Montréal/Pierre Elliott Trudeau International, Québec (26,226 movements) and Vancouver International, British Columbia (19,738 movements) reported the largest number of other international movements in 2013. The movements reported by these three airports represent 79.1% of the total other international itinerant movements.
