2. Peace officers include police officers, correctional officers, bailiffs, justices of the peace, municipal by-law officers and others who are employed for the maintenance of public peace.
3. Rates are calculated per 100,000 population. Population estimates are from Statistics Canada, Demography Division.
4. Percent change is in reference to the previous year and is calculated based upon unrounded rates.

Counts are based upon the most serious offence in the incident. One incident may involve multiple violations.
Data from 1983 to 1997 are drawn from the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR1) Aggregate Survey whereas data from 1998 to 2008 are drawn from the Incident-based Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR2) Aggregate Survey.
