Third quarter 2010 (Previous release)

The operating profit of trucking companies (+$356 million) continued to improve in the third quarter, as year-over-year growth in operating revenue (+15.9%) exceeded that of operating expenses (+13.6%).

These companies earned operating revenue of $10.7 billion which, after deducting operating expenses of $9.3 billion, resulted in an operating profit of almost $1.4 billion. This corresponds to an operating ratio of 0.870. A ratio greater than 1.000 represents an operating loss.

This improvement in profitability was widespread throughout the trucking industry. All provinces except New Brunswick recorded an increase in operating profits. As well, companies in all four industry groups reported higher aggregate profits, regardless of whether their main activity was hauling general or specialized freight either locally or long distance.

Note: Revisions have been made to the estimates from the Quarterly Trucking Survey for the third quarter of 2009.
