On Wednesday, September 19, 2012, Statistics Canada will release the third round of data from the 2011 Census of Population, which will provide a portrait of Canadian families and living arrangements.

An analysis of the findings will be available in an online report entitled Portrait of Families and Living Arrangements in Canada. It will examine how families and living arrangements have changed during the past 10 years, from the perspective of both families and children.

The report will update trends in married couples and common-law couples — including both opposite-sex and same-sex couples — as well as lone-parent families. In addition, it will contain first-time data from the census on the number of stepfamilies and foster children.

Four companion reports will also be available. They will analyze changes in Canadian families during the past 50 years; the type and growth of Canadian households; the living arrangements of young adults aged 20 to 29; and the living arrangements of seniors.

Various products and services will be found on the 2011 Census website from the Families, households and marital status, and Structural type of dwelling and collectives release topics. For example, the data products category will offer a wide range of standard geographic areas, available in the Census Profile, Topic-based tabulations and the Highlight tables.
