There were 2,773 head offices in Canada in 2013, employing 225,380 employees.

Ontario led the way with 1,094 head offices and 93,980 employees. This was followed by Québec with 573 head offices and 51,838 employees, and Alberta, with 398 head offices and 40,825 employees.

Head offices tend to be located in large urban centres, with 68.1% of head offices and 83.9% of head office employment located in eight census metropolitan areas (CMAs): Toronto, Montréal, Calgary, Vancouver, Ottawa–Gatineau, Winnipeg, Québec and Edmonton.

Of these eight CMAs, Toronto had the largest number of head offices with 702. This was followed by Montréal (392), Vancouver (242) and Calgary (216).

Toronto was the CMA with the most head office employees (73,919), followed by Montréal (41,171), Calgary (31,992) and Vancouver (14,840).

With this release, CANSIM table 528-0002 is replacing CANSIM table 528-0001, which has now been terminated.

Changes in methodology were made to the Annual Survey of Service Industries: Annual Head Office Survey. Users should, therefore, exercise caution when comparing 2013 data with historical datasets. Beginning with this release, the estimates are based on the 2012 North American Industrial Classification System.
