Tracking the trends
You could call it the more human side of statistics. While Statistics Canada crunches a whole host of economic data in its monthly indicators, it also looks at the people of the country. This is especially true when it comes to Insights on Canadian Society, a monthly online publication that is just about to celebrate its third birthday.
This month's StatCan Blog examines the diverse topics covered by Insights, from youth political participation and employment patterns of Canadian families with children to the relationship between high school completion and participation in extracurricular activities among First Nations youth.
Founding editor Sébastien Larochelle-Côté says one of the main aims of the publication is accessibility: that is, telling a statistical story about the country that Canadians can understand.
In its three years, the Insights series has published more than 30 articles. The stories go beyond the numbers to discuss the movements and trends in the data.
