The total operating revenue earned by the largest 25 Canadian air carriers was $5.2 billion in the second quarter, up 1.6% from the same quarter a year earlier.

Lower fuel prices contributed to a 2.5% drop in total operating expenses to $4.6 billion, which resulted in a strong increase (+55.6%) in net operating income.

These airlines carried 17.9 million passengers during the quarter, up 4.1% from the same quarter the previous year. The number of passengers flying on scheduled flights was 17.6 million, a 6.7% increase. The number of charter passengers declined from 694,000 to 293,000, as a major charter carrier, CanJet Airlines, continued to wind down operations.
