The amount of electricity produced by electric utility thermal generating stations in Canada totalled 211.6 million megawatt hours (MWh) in 2015, down 1.2% from the previous year.

Electricity from these stations is generated by the heat produced from thermal fuels, mainly uranium, coal and natural gas. Together, these fuel types accounted for more than 92.5% of the electricity produced from all combustible sources in 2015.

Electricity produced from uranium declined 5.0% from 2014 to 95.7 million MWh in 2015, while electricity produced from coal fell 0.4% to 61.6 million MWh. Conversely, electricity produced from natural gas rose 6.2% to 38.5 million MWh.

  Note to readers

The Electric Power Thermal Generating Station Fuel Consumption Survey provides data on the amount of fuel consumed by thermal generating plants, the cost of the fuel consumed for electric power generation and the amount of electricity generated from these fuels.

Data from 2014 have been revised.

The Electric Power Thermal Generating Station Fuel Consumption Survey is now administered as part of Statistics Canada's Integrated Business Statistics Program (IBSP). Detailed information about the IBSP is available from the Behind the data module of our website.
