There were almost 900,000 employees in Canada in 2015 in the federal labour jurisdiction.

The findings come from the 2015 Federal Jurisdiction Workplace Survey, which provides information on employees and employers governed by federal labour standards legislation, and includes, among others, the banking, communications and transportation sectors (including air, maritime, rail and road).

Overall, males represented 62% of all employees, while women accounted for 38%. Women formed the majority of the employees in one industry, banking, where they accounted for 60% of all employees. In both postal services and pipelines industries, and telecommunication and broadcasting services industries, 39% were women. Females accounted for 15% of employees in road transport and 19% in rail transport.

More than 85% of federal jurisdiction employees worked for companies with more than 100 employees. Companies that had less than 20 employees represented 6% of all employment.

The largest industry was banking with 28% of employees, followed by road transportation (16%), telecommunications and broadcasting (16%), postal services and pipelines (14%) and air transportation (12%).

Of the approximate 340,000 women working in the federal jurisdiction, 23% were employed in clerical/administrative jobs, 20% in marketing, sales and services, and 19% in professional occupations. Among the 554,000 men, 24% were in occupations related to truck and bus driving or manual labour with no trade certification, 17% were in technical trades and 15% were in professional occupations.

The two occupations where a higher proportion of females were employed were in marketing, sales and services (64%) and clerical/administrative (62%).

Males dominated some professions. The occupation with the highest share of males measured in the survey was the truck, bus drivers and manual labourers with no trade certification (over 90%).

Approximately one-third of employees were covered by a collective bargaining agreement, with larger companies more likely to have collective agreements in place.

Almost three-quarters of workers earned $20 or more per hour. Companies employing 1 to 5 employees had the lowest ratio, with just over half of the employees earning $20 or more per hour, while 4% of all employees earned the legal minimum wage.

Overall, 19% of women worked part time (less than 30 hours per week) compared with 11% of men. Conversely, 12% of women worked over 40 hours a week compared with 25% of men.
