Refinery receipts increase

Canadian refineries received 8.7 million cubic metres of crude oil in January, up 4.7% from the same month in 2016.

Domestic crude oil increased 1.4% compared with January 2016 to 5.5 million cubic metres.

Crude oil imports rose 11.0% from January 2016 to 3.2 million cubic metres. Imports accounted for 36.5% of total crude oil received at refineries in Canada.

Crude oil inventories held at refineries totalled 3.9 million cubic metres in January, up 1.2% compared with the same month a year earlier.

Crude oil used in refinery production

Total crude oil and equivalent products used in refinery production increased 6.2% from January 2016 to 8.8 million cubic metres.

Synthetic crude oil used in refinery production (+27.0%) as well as conventional heavy (+2.1%) and conventional light (+0.4%) crude oil production were up compared with the same month in 2016. Meanwhile, crude bitumen production decreased 31.7%.

Refinery production up, sales down slightly

Refinery production rose 5.7% to 10.0 million cubic metres in January.

Domestic sales of refined petroleum products decreased 0.8% to 8.5 million cubic metres. Sales of motor gasoline were down 8.5% while diesel increased 6.0% compared with January 2016.

Imports and exports down

Canada imported 1.0 million cubic metres of refined petroleum products in January, down 22.3% from the same month in 2016.

Exports of refined petroleum products decreased 1.6% to 2.6 million cubic metres.

Inventories decrease

Closing inventories of refined petroleum products held at refineries declined 6.3% year over year to 7.8 million cubic metres in January.

The Monthly Refined Petroleum Products survey collects data on the activities of every Canadian refinery involved in the production of refined petroleum products (North American Industry Classification System [NAICS] 324000) and of selected major distributors of these products (NAICS 412000).

Domestic sales include all sales by reporting companies, excluding exports and sales to other reporting companies.

Refinery receipts of crude oil and equivalent hydrocarbons (condensates and pentanes plus) from domestic and foreign sources are for refinery consumption or storage.
