In 2016, more than 22.2 million passengers travelled on scheduled air services between Canada and the United States, a 1.1% increase compared with 2015. This is the seventh consecutive year-over-year increase since the economic downturn of 2009.
Six provinces and one territory showed gains in the volume of passengers travelling between Canada and the United States, with British Columbia experiencing the largest increase (+372,864 passengers). Four provinces and two territories reported decreases, with Alberta recording the largest traffic decline (-338,807). This was the second consecutive year where the number of revenue passengers in and out of Alberta fell.
Transborder travel continued to be primarily to/from the states of California and Florida. Together, these two states accounted for 37.6% of all traffic, with California reporting 20.0% and Florida reporting 17.6%.

Canada's first trans-border commercial flight occurred 80 years ago. In 1937, Canada's first national airline, Trans-Canada Airlines, flew its first regular service on a route between Vancouver and Seattle using its new Lockheed Electra aircraft with a 10-seat capacity. Since this inaugural commercial flight, traffic across the Canada-United States border has seen steady growth. In 1970, four million air passengers travelled across the Canada-US border, with the most popular US destinations including New York, Boston and Chicago. In 2016, there were over 22.2 million passengers who made the cross-border air journey, with popular US destinations still including New York and now Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
