During the first 10 months of 2017, total cheese production (the sum of cheddar and specialty cheeses) rose 3.2% from the same period in 2016 to 391 842 tonnes. However, production of both cheddar and specialty cheeses declined year over year in October, with cheddar cheese down 4.8% to 13 576 tonnes and specialty cheese down 5.3% to 29 103 tonnes.

Conversely, yogurt and creamery butter production increased in October. Yogurt production rose 4.5% from October 2016 to 33 739 tonnes. Production of creamery butter rose 20.0% to 8 643 tonnes—the 14th consecutive month of year-over-year increases for this product.

Total cash receipts from milk and cream sold off farms totalled $565.9 million in October, up 4.4% from October 2016.
