It has been quite a statistical century.

Statistics Canada turns 100 years old this year. Born in 1918 as the Dominion Bureau of Statistics, the new agency had just over 100 employees, all in one building in downtown Ottawa. In fact, in those days, there were still cows grazing along the banks of the Ottawa River in Tunney's Pasture, the current home of StatCan.

Today, with regional offices and data centres across the country, Statistics Canada plays a pivotal role in the life of this nation, gathering information that Canadians want and need to know. We monitor the data heartbeat of the country, tracking economic and social indicators, and allowing Canadians to make informed decisions about all aspects of their lives.

It is a task and a responsibility we don't take lightly.

Throughout the years, Statistics Canada has earned a reputation as a statistical agency that is second to none —a reputation the agency intends to enhance even more in the years ahead.

To mark this important milestone, Statistics Canada welcomes Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, to officially launch Statistics Canada's 100th anniversary celebrations.

To look back on our journey with Canada, today Statistics Canada is releasing the video "One Hundred Years and Counting."
