Today, Statistics Canada is releasing an updated version of General Social Survey: An Overview, 2019. This guide to the General Social Survey (GSS) provides information on current survey themes, target population, sample size, sampling frame, modern methods of data collection, response rates, the availability of data for the Indigenous population, product availability, and recent GSS publications.
Established in 1985, Canada's GSS program was designed as a series of independent, annual, voluntary, cross-sectional surveys, each covering one topic in-depth. The overall objectives of the program were, and continue to be, to gather data on social trends to monitor changes in the living conditions and well-being of Canadians, and to provide information on specific social policy issues.
GSS data have served as evidence behind key government programs and policies aimed at improving the well-being of Canadians. The data regularly inform comprehensive research projects on a variety of essential topics and have become a valuable training tool for quantitative methods in postsecondary institutions across the country. The GSS is an important foundational social survey within Canada's national statistical system.
The most recent GSS program surveys have focused on seven themes: life at work and home; families; caregiving and care receiving; giving, volunteering and participating; victimization; social identity and time use.
