Aircraft movement statistics: Small airports, September 2019

Take-offs and landings at 137 Canadian airports without air traffic control towers reached 59,321 movements in September.

Ten airports accounted for 39.5% of the month's activity: Peterborough, Ontario (4,401 movements); Drummondville, Quebec (3,324); Trois-Rivières, Quebec (3,038); Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador (2,495); Barrie-Orillia-Lake Simcoe Regional, Ontario (2,343); Collingwood, Ontario (2,336); Red Lake, Ontario (1,702); Island Lake, Manitoba (1,306); Tillsonburg, Ontario (1,256); and Muskoka, Ontario (1,250).

Total aircraft movements for the 133 airports for which year-over-year comparisons were possible increased 3.1%, from 56,163 in September 2018 to 57,921 in September 2019, with 66 airports reporting more movements. The largest increases were recorded at the following airports: Drummondville (+1,179 movements), Collingwood (+886) and Tillsonburg (+401). Among those airports showing a decrease, the largest decline was reported at Peterborough (-929).

In September, 118 airports reported 42,410 itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another), with Goose Bay (2,495 movements) and Trois-Rivières (1,718) recording the largest numbers.

Meanwhile, 60 airports reported 14,736 local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport). Peterborough was the most active site with 4,012 take-offs and landings, representing 27.2% of the total local movements reported.

This survey collects data on itinerant and local aircraft movements at airports without a NAV CANADA air traffic control tower or a NAV CANADA flight service station.

An aircraft movement is defined as a take-off, a landing, or a simulated approach by an aircraft.

Data for the same month in the previous year may have been revised.

Data in this monthly release are not seasonally adjusted.
