A new Statistics Canada interactive mapping tool puts our data in your hands. The Canadian Statistical Geospatial Explorer (CSGE), launched today, gives users the ability to explore, create custom maps and download geo-enabled data to power their own geospatial analytics and to inform decision-making about their areas of interest. The CSGE allows users to visualize data at granular levels such as dissemination areas and provincial-territorial health regions, as well as at more aggregated geographies.
Statistics Canada is committed to developing new approaches and products to empower governments, businesses and Canadians to respond to, and recover from, the COVID-19 pandemic.
To continue this commitment, the CSGE provides geo-enabled statistics that are critical to understanding a pandemic. The CSGE includes a range of COVID-19 relevant indicators such as those related to the health, demographic profile and socio-economic conditions of the Canadian population. These indicators are derived from a wide range of data stores including the Canadian Community Health Survey and the Census of Population.
The CSGE also includes new innovative indices developed by Statistics Canada, including the Canadian Index of Multiple Deprivation and the Index of Remoteness.

Providing user support
The CSGE hub includes tutorials to help our users take full advantage of all the features of this interactive tool. These easy-to-follow tutorials are provided to help users select the data they need, create and export custom maps, and export data to Excel or to a shapefile. Examples are provided to show what is possible with the tool.
Note to readers
Within the explorer, you can access selected indicators from the 2016 Census of Population, the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS, 2015/2016 and 2017/2018), the Index of Remoteness, and the Canadian Index of Multiple Deprivation.
The Census Profile, 2016 Census, includes data from the releases on: Population and dwelling counts; age and sex; type of dwelling; families, households and marital status; language; income; immigration and ethnocultural diversity; housing; Aboriginal peoples; education; labour; journey to work; language of work; and mobility and migration.
The Health characteristics, annual estimates from the CCHS includes indicators on a variety of health conditions and behaviours such as asthma, diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, substance use, mental health, physical activity, and nutrition.
The Index of Remoteness was developed for each populated community (census subdivisions) because geographic proximity to service centres and population centres is an important determinant of socio-economic and health outcomes. To measure this dimension, the index is determined by its distance to all the population centres, defined by Statistics Canada in a given travel radius, as well as the population size of these centres.
The Canadian Index of Multiple Deprivation (CIMD) is a geographically-based index of deprivation and marginalization that allows for an understanding of inequalities through various measures of social well-being, including health, education and justice. The four dimensions of deprivation included in the CIMD are: residential instability, economic dependency, ethno-cultural composition and situational vulnerability.
The data available in the Canadian Statistical Geospatial Explorer (CSGE) are not expected to reflect the full impacts of COVID-19 for some time. The explorer will allow users to track the impact of COVID-19 over time as it affects different aspects of Canadians' lives.
More indicators will be added to the CSGE to provide additional measures and a more comprehensive picture of the rapidly-evolving situation.
