With 'stay at home' measures essential to the COVID-19 response, the dwellings in which people live take on added importance in their lives. In Canada's large urban centres, the largest share of households (40%) live in single detached houses that are owned, while the second-largest share (26%) live in apartments that are rented.
Those in rented apartments are less likely to be satisfied with the adequacy of their living space and their ability to cool their home in the summer. Rising temperatures could pose a new challenge to households staying at home, particularly those facing tighter space constraints and lacking air conditioning. Households that rent apartments are also more likely than others to report vulnerabilities in terms of finances, health or social contacts.
