The 2016 Census estimated that 21.9% of the Canadian population were immigrants. A new study using a recent Statistics Canada crowdsourcing data collection initiative provides insights on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of immigrant participants, with a focus on recent immigrants.

Some of the findings of the study show that recent immigrant participants were more likely than other participants to report fair or poor mental health, that the mental health of more than half of recent immigrant participants had worsened since the implementation of physical distancing measures, and that recent immigrant participants who were financially affected by the pandemic exhibited higher levels of anxiety.

Statistics Canada will continue to report on the impacts of the pandemic among vulnerable populations.
