There is a continued and growing awareness of the need to integrate information on economic, social and environmental conditions to better measure well-being or quality of life—perhaps more important than ever given the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prior to the pandemic, Statistics Canada undertook an exercise to provide an overview of selected approaches to measuring and reporting well-being, in Canada and internationally, and to identify opportunities for new and enhanced measures to address current social, economic and environmental issues that may impact the well-being of the Canadian population. Details can be found in a new report released today titled "Moving Forward on Well-being (Quality of Life) Measures in Canada."

This work was conducted in support of the Government of Canada's desire to more fully integrate the quality of life of Canadians in the policy process and in the development of a new Quality of Life framework developed in partnership with Finance Canada and recently used to guide Budget 2021.
