Study: The contribution of pandemic relief benefits to the incomes of Canadians in 2020

Released: 2022-08-02

Nearly three-quarters (74.8%) of women and 61.6% of men received benefits related to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Women were much more likely than men to receive top-ups to the Canada Child Benefit, but slightly less likely to receive federal emergency and recovery benefits.

A new study titled "The contribution of pandemic relief benefits to the incomes of Canadians in 2020" from the Census in Brief series published today provides insights on the pandemic-related benefits received by the Canadian population in 2020. It examines the share of the population receiving benefits; the median amount received; and the contribution of these benefits to income by gender, age group, income level and geography.

This study provides further analysis on results from the 2021 Census of Population, released July 13, 2022, which provided a portrait of the income situation in Canada. The release highlighted how income from government transfers, including pandemic-related benefits, helped offset lost employment income during the first year of the pandemic.
