Beef prices through the supply-chain

Released: 2022-09-02

Today, Statistics Canada is releasing the study "From slaughter to supermarket: How supply-chains inform beef prices."

In 2021, Canada recorded its highest annual increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) since 1991, as global supply chains felt the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic, transportation and supply disruptions, and rebounding energy prices—all alongside the effects of the climate crisis.

This analysis uses price data from the Industrial Product Price Index, the Wholesale Services Price Index, the Retail Services Price Index, and the CPI to detail how manufacturers' price movement works its way through the supply chain to ultimately establish the price consumers pay for beef.
