Travel between Canada and other countries, November 2023

Highlights

In November, the number of non-resident visitors to Canada accounted for 85.1% of the number observed in November 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, the number of returning Canadian residents reached 88.5% of the level recorded in November 2019.

Residents of overseas countries took 300,400 trips to Canada in November 2023, and US residents took 1.2 million trips. At the same time, Canadian residents returned from 3.7 million trips abroad.

Overseas arrivals in Canada

In November, 300,400 overseas residents arrived in Canada, up 29.6% from the 231,700 overseas arrivals in November 2022 and reaching 93.1% of such arrivals recorded in November 2019 (322,800), before the pandemic.

Over one-third (36.7%) of overseas visitors in November 2023 were from Europe (110,300), up 11.6% from November 2022 (98,800) and reaching 85.4% of the trips to Canada by European residents recorded in November 2019 (129,100).

The number of overseas visitors from Asia was 91,300 in November 2023, up 51.8% from the 60,100 such visitors in November 2022 and representing over four-fifths (82.7%) of those recorded in November 2019 (110,300).

The majority (53.3%) of overseas visitors to Canada in November 2023 were residents of Mexico (33,000), the United Kingdom (30,000), France (23,900), and India (21,400).

US-resident trips to Canada

In November, US residents took 1.2 million trips to Canada, up 17.7% from the 1.0 million trips taken in November 2022 and reaching 83.3% of trips taken during the same month in 2019 (1.5 million).

Total US-resident arrivals by land in November 2023 (918,400) increased 19.5% from November 2022 (768,200). Of the total arrivals by land in November 2023, 882,900 were by automobile, 25,100 by bus, 5,900 by pedestrians, and 4,200 by train. Over half (55.0%) of arrivals by automobile were same-day returns (485,800).

Canadian-resident trips to the United States

Canadian residents returned from 2.9 million trips to the United States in November, increasing 10.9% from November 2022 (2.6 million) and reaching 86.9% of such trips taken during the same month in 2019 (3.3 million).

Of the total return trips to the United States taken by Canadian residents in November 2023, 1.9 million were by automobile and over two-thirds (68.2%) of those were same-day returns (1.3 million).

The number of Canadian-resident return trips from the United States by air was 864,000, decreasing 8.8% from the 947,900 trips recorded in November 2022. In November 2023, the number of Canadian-resident return trips from the United States by air reached 97.9% of the pre-pandemic level observed in November 2019 (882,500).

Canadian residents travelling overseas

In November 2023, Canadian residents took 797,900 return trips overseas, increasing 56.8% from the same month in 2022 (508,900). The number of return trips by Canadian residents overseas in November 2023 corresponded to 94.7% of its pre-pandemic level recorded in November 2019 (842,800).

A non-resident visitor is a traveller to Canada whose country of residence is not Canada, whose trip purpose is related to tourism and whose trip duration is less than one year.
