  Note to readers

Data in this release are based on a preliminary version of the T1 Family File (tax filer data).

Statistics on changes in amounts between years do not take inflation into account, which was 6.8% in 2022 based on the annual Consumer Price Index available on table 11-10-0018-01. Changes smaller than +6.8% would represent a decrease in constant dollars.

Changes in the T1 Family File processing introduced in 2022 have resulted in improved estimates for some government transfers. Analysis indicates that this has increased total income by 0.1% for reference year 2021.

Canadians contribute in many ways to charitable organizations. This release reports only on donations to charities and approved organizations for which official tax receipts were provided and claimed on tax returns.

Wages, salaries and commissions reported by tax filers on their T1s are based on the employment income recorded on their T4 Statement of Remuneration Paid. Wages, salaries and commissions also include tax-exempt employment income of tax filers reported on the T90 tax form. In addition to employment income, wages, salaries and commissions include training allowances, tips, gratuities and royalties received from employers during the tax year. Self-employment income is excluded.

All data associated with this release have been tabulated according to the 2021 Standard Geographical Classification used for the 2021 Census.
