Aircraft take-offs and landings at Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations decreased 2.6% in December 2013 from the same month the previous year. These 92 airports reported 321,127 movements in December 2013 compared with 329,573 movements at 93 airports in December 2012. (Edmonton City Centre air traffic control tower officially closed November 30th, 2013.)

Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) decreased 1.2% (-3,073 movements) in December 2013 from the same month the previous year. These airports reported 255,359 movements compared with 258,432 movements in December 2012. Year-over-year variations ranged from an increase of 1,717 movements (+15.1%) at Edmonton International, Alberta to a drop of 1,661 movements (-44.0%) at Calgary/Springbank, Alberta. Fifty airports reported year-over-year decreases in the number of itinerant aircraft movements in December 2013.

In December 2013, there were 65,768 local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) recorded. This represents a decrease of 7.6% (-5,373 movements) compared with the previous year. Victoria International, British Columbia (5,446 movements) and Abbotsford, British Columbia (3,412 movements) recorded the largest number of local movements.

Itinerant movements: domestic, transborder and international

There were 204,180 domestic itinerant movements reported by 92 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations in December 2013, down 1.5% (-3,166 movements) from December 2012. Year-over-year variations ranged from an increase of 1,632 movements (+17.0%) at Edmonton International, Alberta to a drop of 1,654 movements (-44.4%) at Calgary/Springbank, Alberta. Fifty airports reported year-over-year decreases in the number of domestic movements in December 2013.

Seventy-one airports recorded 39,150 transborder itinerant movements (between Canada and the United States) in December 2013, decreasing from 39,396 movements the same month in 2012. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario (14,464 movements) reported the greatest number of transborder itinerant movements.

In December 2013, forty-two airports reported 12,029 other international itinerant movements, up 2.9% from December 2012. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario, recorded 5,413 other international itinerant movements.
