The number of stillbirths (or fetal deaths) in Canada rose from 2,818 in 2011 to 2,965 in 2012 and 3,072 in 2013. The gain from 2011 to 2012 was largely due to an increase in Ontario, where changes were made to the registration process.
For Canada as a whole, the stillbirth rate went up from 7.4 per 1,000 total births (live births and stillbirths) in 2011 to 7.7 in 2012 and 8.0 in 2013. From 1991 to 2006, stillbirth rates fluctuated at around 6.0 per 1,000 total births.
Note to readers
The Vital Statistics – Stillbirth Database is an administrative survey that collects demographic information annually from all provincial and territorial vital statistics registries on all stillbirths (fetal deaths) in Canada.
The data are used to calculate basic indicators (such as counts and rates) on stillbirths to Canadian resident women. Information from this database is also used in the calculation of statistics, such as the late fetal death rate and the perinatal death rate.
