The article "Students in the labour market: After the recession," released today in the Labour Statistics: Research Papers series, uses data from the Labour Force Survey to analyze how the labour market of full-time students fared between the 2007/2008 and 2016/2017 school years.
The analysis suggests the participation and employment rates of full-time students aged 15 to 24 were more negatively affected by the 2008/2009 recession than those of non-students in the same age group.
Among full-time students, younger students (i.e., aged 15 to 17) and male students experienced relatively larger declines in their participation and employment rates compared with older students (i.e., aged 18 to 24) and female students, respectively. Possible non-cyclical factors may have exacerbated this trend, including the increased labour force participation of workers aged 55 and over.
Declines in the participation and employment rates of students were registered in about half the provinces, with Newfoundland and Labrador being the sole province reporting an increase in these rates.
