The six Canadian Level I air carriers flew 6.9 million passengers on scheduled and charter services in September, down 0.5% from September 2018. This marks the third consecutive monthly decline. There was a 2.2% decrease in August 2019.

Traffic fell 1.3% year over year to 19.5 billion passenger-kilometres in September. Capacity decreased 2.8% to 23.3 billion available seat-kilometres, the fourth consecutive monthly decline. These declines were due largely to the continued grounding of all Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. This resulted in a higher passenger load factor in September (83.6%) compared with the same month a year earlier (82.3%), as the decline in capacity was stronger than the decrease in traffic.

On average, each passenger travelled 2,820 kilometres, down 0.8% compared with September 2018.

The volume of turbo fuel consumed declined 2.1% to 690.3 million litres. The number of flying hours fell 3.6% to 186,000 hours. September marked the fifth consecutive monthly decline in hours flown. These decreases were due largely to the MAX's grounding.

Total operating revenue was up 4.1% to $2.1 billion in September compared with the same month a year earlier.

The Monthly Civil Aviation Survey covers all Canadian Level I air carriers: Air Canada (including Air Canada Rouge), Air Transat, Jazz, Porter, Sunwing and WestJet (including Swoop, WestJet Encore and WestJet Link).

The average passenger trip length is obtained by dividing the number of passenger-kilometres by the number of passengers. Trips across Canada and across the globe are included in this calculation.

Data in this monthly release are not seasonally adjusted.

Data for January to August 2019 have been revised.
