What is the census?

  • Every five years, the census counts everyone living in Canada.
  • Census questions are available in 15 Indigenous languages, and accessible formats.
  • The next census will take place in May 2026.

You can complete your census online at census.gc.ca.

Why is it important for you to participate?

With census data, Indigenous communities, organizations and businesses can use important information and facts about population growth, languages spoken, education levels and much more to help in decision-making.

Three key findings – Population growth, languages spoken, and education levels

The 2021 Census counted 1.8 million Indigenous people, or 5.0% of the total population in Canada.

There are many census subdivisions in Canada with at least 100 residents who speak an Indigenous language well enough to conduct a conversation.

In 2021, a smaller proportion of Indigenous adults held postsecondary qualifications compared to non-Indigenous adults, in part due to barriers such as geographical remoteness – particularly among Inuit.

We thank you in advance for your participation in the 2026 Census.

Your data are confidential

Statistics Canada places the highest importance on protecting the confidentiality of your personal information. The Statistics Act specifically requires that information about individuals be protected and kept strictly confidential. For more information, please visit www.census.gc.ca.
