Theory and Application of Longitudinal Surveys (Course code 0411)

Purpose

Allow participants to learn the various types of surveys repeated over time, while underlying the particularities of each. This is accomplished by visiting all survey steps.

Using that approach, methodological issues raised from the early steps such as sampling frame and selection, to later steps such as estimation and analysis, are examined.

Benefits to the participants

Participants will be able to apply the concepts and techniques in their work.

Target population

Employees with basic knowledge of mathematical statistics and of sampling, and who wish to increase their knowledge of the various methodological issues relative to surveys repeated over time.

Quality Control Methods for Survey Operations (Course code 0445)

Purpose

To provide an operational overview of the methods of quality control.

Benefits to participants

This course in an excerpt of the “Statistical Methods for Quality Control” STC#0446, where most of the theoretical aspects have been removed. The focus of this course is to discuss the practical methods of quality control that are available for survey operations within a broader framework of quality assurance and management. Statistical and non-statistical methods for quality control and assurance will be discussed. This will include planning, acceptance sampling, acceptance control, process control, as well as various quality tools for achieving quality improvements. The course will involve the practical application of concepts through the use of case studies and group workshops each day.

Target population

Professional and technical employees who wish to have an operational overview of the methods and concepts of quality control available for survey operations without the emphasis of theoretical foundations.

People wishing for a more theoretical introduction to quality control should refer to the course "Statistical Methods for Quality Control" STC#0446.

Course outline

  • Planning for Quality
  • Principles of Quality Control
  • Acceptance Sampling Techniques
  • Statistical Process Control
  • Administration of Quality Control
  • Quality Improvement Methods & Tools

Common law status of person 15 years or over, category

The data for this variable are reported using the following classification(s) and/or list(s):

'Common law status' refers to whether the person aged 15 or over is living with a person of the opposite sex or of the same sex as a couple but is not legally married to that person. It includes situations where the members of such a couple are living apart temporarily because of illness, work or school.

'Person 15 years or over' refers to all individuals whose age is 15 years or over.

Legal marital status of person, category

The data for this variable are reported using the following classification(s) and/or list(s):

'Legal marital status' refers to the marital status of the person under the law (e.g., single, married, widowed). All persons aged less than 15 are considered as single.

Note: In the 2011 National Household Survey, the phrase "including living common law" was not used. "Single (including living common law)" was called "Single (never legally married)". "Separated (including living common law)" was called "Separated, but not legally married".

'Person' refers to an individual and is the unit of analysis for most social statistics programmes.
