Monthly provincial prices received by farmers in October for grains, oilseeds, specialty crops, cattle, hogs, poultry, eggs and dairy products are now available.
Canola prices showed mixed results in October, with monthly price movements varying across the provinces, ranging from a 0.5% decline in Saskatchewan to a 0.8% increase in Alberta and in Manitoba. Year over year, canola prices recorded double-digit decreases in every province, led by Ontario (-24.1%). While high global soybean production put downward pressure on oilseed prices, robust domestic and international demand supported prices.
Prices for dry peas were up in October compared with September, led by Saskatchewan (+8.9%). In September, India extended the suspension of the tariff on yellow peas, exerting upward pressure on prices.
In October, monthly barley price movements were mixed, with Ontario (+11.2%) reporting the largest increase and Prince Edward Island (-4.9%) reporting the largest decrease.
Prices for wheat (excluding durum) increased in most provinces in October compared with September, led by Ontario (+3.3%). Robust global and domestic demand for wheat supported wheat (excluding durum) prices.
Monthly slaughter cattle prices decreased compared with September in all provinces in October, except in Quebec (+0.4%). The drops ranged from 0.5% in British Columbia to 1.4% in Alberta. This marked the fourth consecutive month of price decreases for Alberta. Year over year, slaughter cattle prices were at least 6.8% higher across all provinces in October.
Compared with September, Quebec (-1.5%) and the Atlantic provinces (-3.4%) recorded price declines for feeder cattle in October, while other provinces posted gains. The increases ranged from 0.4% in Ontario to 5.8% in Alberta.
In October, monthly slaughter hog price movements varied. Decreases were observed in Nova Scotia (-2.5%), British Columbia (-1.1%), Saskatchewan (-0.6%) and Ontario (-0.2%), and increases were recorded in the remaining provinces. The gains ranged from 0.2% in New Brunswick to 2.5% in Alberta.
