Oilseed crushing statistics
Oilseed processors crushed 831.2 thousand tonnes of canola in May, down 9.6% from April and 9.7% from May 2024. Oil production totalled 353.2 thousand tonnes in May 2025, while meal production totalled 490.0 thousand tonnes.
Canadian processors also crushed 158.4 thousand tonnes of soybeans in May, down 8.0% from April and down 2.8% from the same month one year earlier. Soybean oil production totalled 29.4 thousand tonnes, while meal production totalled 121.4 thousand tonnes.
Deliveries of major grains
In May, deliveries of major grains across Canada fell by 10.5% from the same month the previous year, totalling 3.7 million tonnes. The decline in deliveries was attributable to canola (-29.0% to 1.1 million tonnes), barley (-44.0% to 191.4 thousand tonnes) and flaxseed (-36.5% to 18.8 thousand tonnes). Saskatchewan accounted for nearly half (47.8%) of all deliveries, while Alberta accounted for 31.7% and Manitoba accounted for 16.2%.
Major grains include wheat (excluding durum), durum wheat, oats, barley, rye, flaxseed and canola.
Focus on Canada and the United States
Producer deliveries capture grain which is destined for a primary elevator, feed mill, crushing plant or flour mill. This includes grain elevators that hold grain before it is exported, as well as shipments to US markets which are not licensed by the Canadian Grain Commission.
The imposition of tariffs by the United States may have an impact on producer deliveries of major grains in the coming months. In 2024, Canada exported a total of 4.5 million tonnes of wheat (excluding durum), durum wheat, oats, barley, rye, flaxseed and canola to the United States. Statistics Canada will continue to monitor developments on tariffs and the impact on producer deliveries.
