Following a five-year period of relative stability, restrictions on gatherings imposed during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic (2020/2021) resulted in a 22% drop in active general civil cases in Canadian civil courts. Overall, general civil caseloads rose from 2020/2021 to 2023/2024 (+10%); however, there were still fewer active general civil cases in 2023/2024 than before the start of the pandemic (-14%). This suggests that the Canadian civil court system was still recovering from the slowdown at the height of the pandemic (Chart 1; Table 1).
