Farm product prices, September 2022

Prices received by farmers in September for grains, oilseeds, specialty crops, cattle, hogs, poultry, eggs, and dairy products are now available at the provincial level.

Slaughter hog prices declined across all provinces in September as high feed costs and prolonged drought encouraged farmers to liquidate their herds, leading to increased supply for United States processors. The September price declines ranged from 10.5% in British Columbia to 16.7% in Quebec, marking the end of an eight-month upward trend for Ontario, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and British Columbia and a four-month upward trend for the remaining provinces.

In September, British Columbia (+2.4%) and Alberta (+0.7%) slaughter cattle monthly prices rose for the eighth consecutive month. In contrast, the Atlantic provinces and Ontario reported their third consecutive month of price decreases.

Feeder cattle prices increased in all provinces except for Alberta (-1.0%) from August to September. Ontario (+10.7%), Manitoba (+9.6%), and British Columbia (+2.8%) feeder cattle prices increased for a sixth consecutive month.

In September, monthly prices for wheat excluding durum remained flat in the Prairie provinces after an approximate 12.0% drop in August. Higher domestic production and the reopening of Ukrainian ports put downward pressure on prices, while a tighter world supply, estimated by the United States Department of Agriculture, and a weaker Canadian dollar supported higher prices.

In September, canola prices continued the month-over-month decrease across the Prairie provinces, with the largest decline in Manitoba (-9.9%), followed by Alberta (-9.5%). Higher domestic and global supply of oilseeds as well as the resumption of Indonesia exporting palm oil put downward pressure on canola prices.
