Organic produce: A small slice of Canada’s fruit and veggie pie

A few things stand out when you visit the produce section of a Canadian grocery store: the organic section is a lot smaller than the “conventional” produce section, and prices are generally higher. The same holds true at the national level, where, in 2025, organic vegetables accounted for 5.7% of total vegetable farmgate sales and organic fruits accounted for 5.3% of total fruit farmgate sales.

Canadian organic farmers sold $82.3 million of fruits in 2025, up 13.7% from a year earlier, but almost one-quarter (-24.2%) below the record high set in 2019.

In 2025, Canada’s big three organic fruits in terms of sales were cranberries, apples and blueberries.

Farmers sold $26.6 million of organic cranberries in 2025, up 32.4% from a year earlier, but 46.0% below the all-time high sales of 2019. Overall, farmers sold 15 612 tonnes of cranberries in 2025, with most grown in Quebec.

Organic blueberry sales were up 4.7% year over year to $13.1 million, but well below (-56.2%) the record high sales of 2020. Overall, farmers grew 5 857 tonnes of organic blueberries in 2025, with Quebec and British Columbia accounting for the largest share of the sales.

Following record sales in 2024, organic apple sales fell 8.3% year over year to $21.5 million in 2025. 

Sales of Canadian-grown organic vegetables rose 8.0% year over year to an all-time high $103.6 million in 2025 and stood 72.1% higher than when we started tracking organic veggie sales in 2019.

In 2025, Canada’s big three organic vegetables in terms of sales and marketed production were dry onions, corn and carrots.

Organic dry onion sales were down slightly (-3.1%) from the record high sales of 2024 to $10.6 million. Most of the organic dry onions sold came from fields in Alberta and Manitoba. Overall, farmers grew 5 711 tonnes of dry onions in 2025.

Organic corn sales rose 15.6% year over year to $10.3 million, with most of the sales coming from farms in Ontario and Quebec. Farmers grew just over 10 million tonnes of organic corn in 2025.

Organic carrot sales rose 6.0% year over year to an all-time high of $8.7 million. Most of Canada’s organic carrots were grown in Quebec. Organic carrot production totalled 7 259 tonnes in 2025. 

Organic farmers in Quebec accounted for just under three-fifths of total veggie (58.6%) and fruit (58.7%) sales, making La Belle Province by far Canada’s organic leader.

Organic produce sales from Ontario accounted 17.3% of veggie sales and 12.0% of fruit sales.

British Columbia was the leader out West, capturing one-quarter (25.0%) of total organic fruit sales in 2025 and 14.3% of total organic veggie sales.
