Above average temperatures in most parts of the country, combined with the Chinese New Year, contributed to higher sales at food services and drinking places in February.
Sales (seasonally adjusted) at food services and drinking places declined 1.9% to $7.9 billion in January. Full-service (-6.4%), special food services (-1.8%) and drinking places (-0.5%) reported lower sales, while limited-service eating places (+2.4%) reported higher sales.
Sales at food services and drinking places rose 1.1% to $8.0 billion in December 2023 (seasonally adjusted). Sales were up in eight provinces, with the largest increases in dollar terms in Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta.
