A year in stats

It was a year when Canadians learned a bit more about themselves and the country they call home.

The final 2015 edition of the StatCan Blog looks back at the last 12 months and highlights some of the stories that the agency released in its ongoing efforts to report on the Canadian journey.

For example, Canada hit an age milestone in 2015. For the first time, the number of Canadians aged 65 and older outnumbered those aged 14 and under.

The crime victimization rate continued to drop, although other data showed that the reporting rate for a number of offences, most notably sexual assault, remained low.

The agency also introduced new data products, like the Job Vacancy and Wage Survey, which broke down job vacancy data by occupation and economic region.

These were all stories told in an interactive way in the new incarnation of The Daily, StatCan's official release bulletin.

The year that lies ahead promises to be just as exciting, as the agency once again counts everyone in. Census 2016 is set for next May, complete with the return of the mandatory long-form census, as StatCan gets ready to gather new stories to tell.
