Census talk with the Chief Statistician

Canada is getting ready for its national numerical close-up.

This month's StatCan Blog article interviews Chief Statistician Wayne R. Smith about the ongoing preparations for Census 2016.

Plans for the upcoming census include the return of the mandatory long-form Census, a statistical tool that helps gather additional contextual information about Canadians. The Government of Canada's decision to restore the mandatory long-form Census late in 2015 meant some quick adjustments to the plans for this year's census, but nothing that could not be accommodated, says Mr. Smith.

In 2016, Statistics Canada has introduced many innovations as the agency continues to try to improve the way it collects data. The agency's goal is to increase the number of Canadians who respond to the 2016 Census via the Internet, with an objective of 65% of households. In February, census collection will start in Canada's North. In May, collection takes place in other parts of Canada.
