Statistics Canada's Centre for Gender, Diversity and Inclusion Statistics (CGDIS) has released a new data table on the gender distribution of federally appointed judges. This information will be used by the Gender Results Framework, a whole-of-government tool designed to track gender equality in Canada.

Using data from the Office of the Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs Canada, the CGDIS has produced a new table to highlight the gender distribution of federally appointed judges in federal, provincial, and territorial courts. According to these data, there were 1,202 federally appointed judges in Canada as of October 1, 2021. Of these judges, approximately 43.8% were women. This percentage varies across the country. Across the territories, at least 50% of federally appointed judges were women whereas in the rest of the country, less than 50% of federally appointed judges were women. Notably, courts in Saskatchewan and Prince Edward Island had the lowest percentage of women at 35.7% and 40.0%, respectively.

This new data table is now published on the Statistics Canada website. For more information on the Gender Results Framework and products disaggregated by gender, please go to the Sex, Gender and Sexual Orientation Statistics Hub.

  Note to readers
