Today, Statistics Canada's Centre for Gender, Diversity and Inclusion Statistics is releasing two new data tables on the proportion of women and men in leadership roles. These statistics will be used by the Gender Results Framework, a whole-of-government tool designed to track progress in advancing gender equality in Canada.
Using data from the 2006 Census of Population, 2011 National Household Survey and 2016 Census of Population, the Centre has produced two new tables to highlight the gender distribution of persons who worked as legislators and as judges, including a breakdown by administrative level (federal, provincial and territorial, local and regional).
According to the 2016 Census of Population, approximately 8,600 persons worked as legislators. Of these, 35% were women, an increase of two percentage points since 2006. Additionally, about 3,400 persons worked as judges, of which 37% were women. Women's representation in this occupation increased 12 percentage points in the decade prior to the 2016 Census.
Notably, within both of these occupations, a large proportion of people were aged 55 years or older―58% of legislators and 78% of judges in 2016.
Both tables are disaggregated by province and territory, age group as well as other demographic characteristics, including population groups designated as visible minorities, immigration status and Indigenous identity.
Tables will be updated with data from the 2021 Census of Population when they become available.
These new data tables will soon be housed in the Gender, Diversity and Inclusion Statistics Hub.
Note to readers
Legislators participate in the activities of a federal, provincial, territorial or local government legislative body or executive council, band council or school board as elected or appointed members. Examples include members of federal and provincial Parliaments, city councilors, school board trustees and chiefs in First Nations communities.
Judges, in turn, adjudicate civil and criminal cases and administer justice in federal and provincial courts of law.
