Crushing statistics of major oilseeds, Canada and United States, 2022

Released: 2023-03-13

Canadian oilseed processors crushed 8 769 088 tonnes of canola in 2022, down 11.0% from 2021. The amount of soybeans crushed increased by 13.3% to 1 869 040 tonnes in 2022 compared with 2021. Oil production totalled 3 651 955 tonnes for canola and 349 216 tonnes for soybeans, while meal production totalled 5 222 418 tonnes for canola and 1 453 367 tonnes for soybeans.

Domestic canola crush was low for the first eight months of 2022 because of drought conditions in the Prairies throughout the 2021 growing season, which negatively impacted yields. This resulted in lower supply coming into 2022, as well as lower crop quality and lower oil content for canola.

Canola crushing was higher from September to December 2022 because of better crop conditions in the 2022 growing season. In 2022, total canola production rebounded to 18 173 774 tonnes, up from 13 752 286 tonnes in 2021.

A large portion of the canola grown in Canada is used by domestic crushers. In the 2021/2022 crop year (August 2021 to July 2022 for canola), the domestic crush of 8 555 367 tonnes represented 54.7% of total disposition, while exports of canola accounted for 33.6%. A higher share of total disposition went to domestic crush in the 2021/2022 crop year than in the previous crop year, when domestic crush represented 45.9% of total disposition.

In the United States, over the 2022 calendar year, oilseed processors crushed 59 743 476 tonnes of soybeans (+2.6% from 2021) and 1 727 735 tonnes of canola (-7.1% from 2021). Oil production totalled 11 784 985 tonnes for soybeans and 687 181 tonnes for canola, while meal production totalled 43 803 099 tonnes for soybeans and 999 482 tonnes for canola.
