Sales in the food services and drinking places subsector increased 0.5% to $5.1 billion in August. Prices for food purchased from restaurants rose 2.8% in the 12 months to August, following a 2.7% gain in July.
Food services and drinking places sales increase
All four industries reported increased sales in August. Higher sales in the full-service restaurant industry (+0.5%) accounted for the largest gain in dollar terms, while the limited-service restaurant industry rose 0.4%. The special food services industry group, which includes food service contractors, caterers and mobile food services, increased 1.8%. Sales in the drinking places industry were up 0.8%, following a 1.7% decline the previous month.
Sales up in six provinces
Alberta reported a 1.5% increase in August, following two consecutive months of declines.
Sales increased for the second consecutive month in Quebec (+1.1%) and Ontario (+0.2%), while sales in British Columbia (+0.6%) increased for the third consecutive month.
Sales fell 1.5% in Saskatchewan, giving back most of the gains in July. Manitoba registered a 0.8% increase.
Receipts were down in Nova Scotia (-0.6%), Newfoundland and Labrador (-0.2%), and Prince Edward Island (-0.1%), while receipts edged up 0.1% in New Brunswick.
