The Gender, Diversity and Inclusion Statistics (GDIS) Hub, first launched in 2018, brings together Statistics Canada's products related to gender, diversity and inclusion in Canada, as well as information on gender statistics in the international context. The hub enables data users to more easily find disaggregated and intersectional data, analytical products and insights. Statistics Canada uses data hubs, by subject or population group, as a means to facilitate access to a wide range of information.
Today, Statistics Canada is launching an updated GDIS Hub, which includes more information on diverse population groups in Canada.
The GDIS Hub includes, and connects to, a new Sex, Gender and Sexual Orientation Hub, which was developed to monitor and report on indicators included in the Gender Results Framework—a framework that represents the Government of Canada's vision for gender equality in Canada. This new Sex, Gender and Sexual Orientation Hub will include data and analyses on gender and LGBTQ2+ communities, and will, over time, feature more functionality, such as the ability to filter by population group.
In addition, users will be able to easily connect directly from the GDIS Hub to other relevant Statistics Canada data hubs and portals, specifically Sex, Gender and Sexual Orientation, Statistics on Indigenous peoples, Immigration and ethnocultural diversity statistics, Accessibility statistics, Older adults and population aging statistics, Rural Canada statistics, Languages statistics, and the Dimensions of Poverty Hub.
The GDIS Hub now serves as the primary platform for disseminating products and information related to Statistics Canada's Disaggregated data action plan: Why it matters to you. Statistics Canada is implementing this action plan to guide our data efforts to better meet the needs of data users, while remaining respectful and inclusive, and continuing to guarantee privacy and confidentiality.
Statistics Canada will continue to update the GDIS Hub as new data and resources become available.
Furthermore, Statistics Canada will engage with diverse groups of data users to understand their experiences, ensure that the hub is meeting their data needs, and to solicit their feedback on hub functionality and information availability.
Note to readers
Aggregated and disaggregated data
Aggregated data refer to large-scale data summaries and reports. Disaggregated data are data that have been divided into categories, such as region, gender and ethnicity. Unlike aggregated data, disaggregated data may reveal important insights between and among different groups.
Gender-based Analysis Plus and Intersectionality
The Government of Canada has committed to Gender-based Analysis Plus (GBA Plus) to ensure that gender, diversity and inclusion perspectives are considered in the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs, policies and other initiatives.
GBA Plus is an analytical process used to assess how diverse groups of women, men, and non-binary people may experience policies, programs and other initiatives differently. It is important to note that intersectionality is a foundational GBA Plus concept—the "plus" acknowledges that we all have multiple identity factors that intersect to make us who we are.
The term "intersectionality" was coined by American scholar Dr. Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989, and notions of intersectionality have been adopted and adapted around the world by individuals and groups that are seeking to identify the root of various inequalities.
LGBTQ2+
The language related to LGBTQ2+ communities is rapidly evolving and terminology may shift over time, vary by context, and mean different things to different people. LGBTQ2 is the official acronym used by the Government of Canada across its programs and policies. At Statistics Canada, the LGBTQ2+ acronym is used to reflect the broad scope of gender and sexual identities that exist in society.
The acronym LGBTQ2+ used in this Daily includes lesbian, gay, bisexual, or another minority sexual identity such as asexual or pansexual, as well as minority gender identity (trans and non-binary identities like genderqueer, gender fluid, pangender or agender).
